What are Skin Tags

Skin tags are small, hanging or protruding growths that often have a narrow stalk connecting them to the skin. They are made up of collagen fibers, blood vessels, and fat cells. Skin tags are typically painless and can range in size from a few millimeters to a centimeter or more. Skin tags can develop in various areas of the body where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, and under the breasts. They can also occur on other parts of the body.

What Causes Skin Tags

The exact cause of skin tags is not fully understood, but several factors may contribute to their development, including:

  • Friction: Skin rubbing against skin or clothing in areas of the body with folds or creases can lead to the formation of skin tags.

  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as during pregnancy, may increase the likelihood of developing skin tags.

  • Genetics: Some individuals may be more genetically predisposed to developing skin tags.

  • Obesity: Being overweight or obese can be a contributing factor, as excess skin folds and increased friction may occur.

How are Skin Tags treated

Skin tags are generally harmless and do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or aesthetic concerns. However, if desired, treatment options may include:

  • Snipping or excision: Skin tags can be removed by a healthcare professional using scissors, a scalpel, or a surgical snip. Local anesthesia may be used to numb the area.

  • Cryotherapy: Freezing the skin tag with liquid nitrogen causes it to shrivel and fall off. This procedure is known as cryotherapy or cryosurgery.

  • Cauterization: Burning the skin tag using a heated instrument is another method of removal.

  • Ligation: Tying off the base of the skin tag with a string or suture cuts off its blood supply, causing it to eventually fall off.

Embark on your journey to radiant skin

It is important to note that home removal techniques, such as tying off a skin tag with a string, are not recommended as they can lead to infection or scarring. It is best to consult with a dermatologist for proper evaluation and safe removal of skin tags.
